Drewitz Military Airfield

Rapid repairs without relocating the air unit

Damaged concrete airfield pavements needed to be repaired quickly. The key requirement was that the air unit based there had to be able to remain on site.

01

Role and responsibility

Frank-Michael Adam was the responsible staff officer on the client side within the Air Forces/Air Defence Command (LSK/LV). He proposed incorporating existing PAG precast prestressed concrete slabs into an integrated rapid repair method.

02

Contribution to the project

In 1989, Adam laid the technical and procedural groundwork for maintaining, repairing and reconstructing runways and aircraft shelters. He combined development of the technical solution with planning its implementation. The method used available PAG slabs. A road construction company specialising in airfield pavements carried out the detailed design and construction work.

03

Field trial

The first field trial in Drewitz in 1990 covered five damaged areas within 14 days. It confirmed that the method worked without requiring the air unit to relocate.
